Torque Multiplier
Abolox®- Your Best Source for Torque Multiplier
Sometimes a bolt or nut just won't come loose. Or, you need to tighten it, but a torque wrench is too big to fit. That's where a torque multiplier comes in. Torque multipliers use planetary gears to multiply the force you put on the tool to tighten or loosen nuts and bolts. They are handy for the professional auto repair technician or construction worker. They are also handy to have around the home, too.
Torque Multiplier in the Shop and at Home
A torque multiplier makes it easy for anyone of any strength to remove stubborn bolts or tighten bolts and nuts to the proper torque. Auto technicians often run into bolts that are frozen in the engine or another part of the vehicle, especially when working on exhaust or body parts. Those in construction might need the help of a torque multiplier when working with larger bolts, such as lag bolts and other large bolts that are used to bolt supporting structures together. Sometimes, smaller nuts and bolts give people trouble because they are starting to rust in the threads or someone over torqued them.Since a torque multiplier multiplies the force on the tool, it can easily break most bolts and nuts loose, especially for those who do not have the arm and shoulder strength to break the bolt loose.
How the Torque Multiplier Works
A torque multiplier uses gears to multiply the force you put on the handle. A reaction bar placed firmly against another object helps provide the torque. The reaction bar and planetary gears increase the torque the ratchet (sold separately) uses and the force of your strength to tighten or loosen the nut or bolt.
Torque Multiplier Usage
Any time you have to tighten a bolt with more torque than you are able to put on it with just a ratchet or loosen a bolt that rusted in place or that someone over-torqued, a torque multiplier can add strength to the force you are able to use. When torquing something, the best tool is a torque wrench, but a torque wrench doesn't always fit in some places because of its long handle.
Torque Multiplier Features
Depending on the brand and type of torque multiplier you choose, features include:
- Nut-turning power that requires much less force than conventional tools.
- Output and input rotation is in the same direction.
- The reaction bar rotation is opposite to the input direction. It must have a rigid object that is able to withstand the generated reaction force.
- Easily disassembled to clean, lubricate and inspect.
- Designed to break stubborn bolts loose.
- Safe way of producing torque.
- Precision planetary gears.
- Can use with air-driven non-impact wrenches. They are not designed to be used with impact guns.
- Needle bearing construction.
- Standard reaction plate.
