Why should I use hearing protection? Hearing can be damaged by loud persistent noise. The inner parts of your ears contain tiny hairs that become damaged beyond repair after prolonged exposure to damaging sound levels. Determine the level of sound protection by evaluating your work site sound levels and select the proper NRR (Noise Reduction Rating). The NRR is a noise measurement rating based on the capability of ear plugs or earmuffs to block sound. A NRR rating of 21 dB for any Hearing Protection Device (HPD) will block less sound than one rated at 26 dB. Earmuffs or ear plugs will block sound more effectively the higher the NRR number, the more sound, the higher NRR rating you need. For maximum hearing protection, use both plugs a muffs.
